Today we went to Messy Art at Play. We were meeting our friends (Penelope and Cynthia) there so we had every intention of getting there right at the beginning, but Noah decided that last night would be his one crappy sleep night and woke up several times throughout the night. So Jon, Noah and I slept in a little bit in hopes to recover from that rough night. Anyways, it's in Mid-City area so we had to drive 30ish + minutes to get there and we were already running behind from sleeping in, so we were just plain late late late. Basically, when we got there kids were getting fed and the staff was starting to clean up. The lady who was in charge was SO nice though and she let us jump in and go get messy anyways.
Noah started out with a art smock and a few colors, but before I knew it he was collecting all of the other paint containers from other easels and going to town. He seemed really really into it and even took off the smock so he could have more mobility. But then he noticed that his hands were getting messy and that the paint was also kind of messy. Then he wanted me to clean his hands, help arrange his paint brushes, close the paint containers and stack everything up. This poor kid is turning into his mother. *sigh* Anyways, I encouraged him to go back to his work and he managed to (with my help of course) crumple tissue paper and add it to his artwork. He didn't seem too enthused about the paper addition. It probably didn't go with whatever he was envisioning, but once he finished, he was back to stacking brushes and containers. Then picking up pieces of chalk around the room and placing them in their appropriate containers. He also hustled this other little girl into giving him her brushes and paint containers so he could stack them. I apologized profusely of course.
Once I was sure he was done, I finally coaxed Noah to wash up and we headed into the play area where he got to run around and be a silly pants for a little while. He really enjoyed that part as well. This place was seriously adorable. Because it's kind of far away (not really that far, my kid just HATES the car which makes every car ride seem like a BILLION miles), it might not be a place we go to every week, but every once in a while I could see it being a great place for Noah to go play with friends and get his art on. Yes, of course he could paint at our house (and we do)... sure...but this place is amazing because everything is covered in canvas or chalk paint and is completely mess proof because it's already a mess. No worries about ruining anything which I love because l have a tendency to be a little bit of a control freak when it comes to messes.
So yay to a successful weekly wonder and special thanks to Cynthia and Penny for letting us crash their play group so we could get our mess on. We had a blast!
